Weekly Food for Thought: 07/13/2018

In honor of Friday the 13th, here is a round-up of some fun and spooky discoveries:

Goth Succulents are a Thing - and I really, really want some for my balcony now! Or maybe my bedroom window sill. The coffee table. As a kitchen centerpiece. Ugh.

This idea that Dracula is really just every rapist and abuser you know doesn't sit well with me, having read the damn, actual book and not just the Bela Lugosi films which are, truthfully, hilariously sad. I mean, let's be real - The Count was a religious crusader against the Turks and the defender of Transylvania who took the news of his wife's suicide pretty hard and turned his back quite violently on God when the Church refused to bury her. I can dig.

So he spends the next several hundred years as a cursed creature of the night seeking out the reincarnation of his lost love's soul so they can finally be together again. And it's Mina who saves them both - so take that! #girlpower

Ghost Particles from outer space, tiny sub-atomic neutrinos spit out by a black hole from a distant galaxy, were detected at the South Pole recently and are helping to shed new light on what's happening in the universe. Why are they called Ghost Particles though? Hold up your hand to the sky - about a billion of them just passed through you and you didn't feel it.

Are you eating too much avocado? No, no, no! Before you cast the beloved avocado toast from your breakfast lineup, just read the article and maybe....don't add it to all your smoothies?

You want to know what's worse than "mom jeans"? Trouser jeans. Belted trouser jeans. You're designers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should....

Superman actor Henry Cavill has some pretty scary and outdated views on approaching and dating women:  “There’s something wonderful about a man chasing a woman. There’s a traditional approach to that, which is nice. I think a woman should be wooed and chased, but maybe I’m old-fashioned for thinking that,” he said.

In the aftermath of the #MeToo movement, he claims he's afraid to flirt and date. Good, you should be afraid. If we have to fear for our lives, so should you. How do you like them apples, boy wonder?

Meet the ghosts who call the St Paul Mounds Theater home. Located on St. Paul's Eastside, the theater is said to be haunted by three different ghosts: a projectionist, a former usher, and a little girl who often appears on stage.

  1. Great post. I love the idea of the goth succulents. As for dating after the #MeToo movement, I really dislike the way he phrased things in such a creepy way, but I've also talked to really nice guys who have been told that what they were doing was harrassment simply for approaching a woman and giving her a compliment. They are now afraid to do so. It's so sad that some people will abuse anything.

    1. That's a good point. As with any initially positive movement, some bad apples with take it to an extreme and use it as an excuse to be nasty to well-meaning people. No one should be afraid to approach someone and offer a compliment, but all people should also learn to take rejection gracefully if that person rebuffs them or expresses disinterest.

But that's a whole different can of worms to open, isn't it?

  2. Wow! I have never heard of a Goth succulent before! Thanks for sharing! They are soo pretty I especially like the goth succulent arrangement! And girl omg too much avocado is bad :( Oh no! I guess those on Keto diets should read this. Lots of people are loading up on so much fat to stay skinny but they don't realize they could be hurting their heart health.
