3 Favorite Lip Products for the Season

Lip products tend to be pretty hit or miss with me - I don't wear bright lip colors and I don't like anything that feels sticky or heavy on my lips. Fortunately, I've narrowed down my three favorite lip products to use this winter:

Burt's Bee Lip Balm

NYX Matte Lipstick in Stockholm

Laura Geller Nude Kisses lip gloss
⧫ ⧫ ⧫ During the cold winter months, I find it absolutely crucial to use a good lip balm. I've tried a lot of different ones over the years but I keep coming back to Burt's Bees. Made from natural beeswax, this balm helps seal in moisture and leaves a nice tingly feeling on my lips.  ⧫ ⧫ ⧫ Liquid lipsticks are new to me, so being able to test a few of them thanks to Birchbox turned me onto NYX's soft matte lip creams. If anyone has any tips to keep the color from drying out and cracking halfway through the day, please let me know!  ⧫ ⧫ ⧫ I don't like lip glosses, not since the days of Lipsmackers or Lisa Frank, but this Laura Geller one might ha…

BIRCHBOX October 2018 Unboxing + Review

I gotta say, Birchbox is doing something right with their curated boxes, since I end up picking those 90% of the time over their sample selection and personalized boxes. October's box did not disappoint!

The Rundown:

ITTSE Pearl Eyeshadow in Metamorphosis
Laura Geller Nude Kisses Hugging Lip Gloss in Blushing
R+CO Acid Wash ACV Cleansing Rinse
Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream
SAND & SKY Australian Pink Clay Flash Perfection Exfoliation Treatment

"Enhance your eyes with this rich, bronze shade that has a pearlized metallic sheen. Wear it alone or add it to the exclusive ittse x Birchbox Customizable Palette."

"This pre-shampoo treatment gets rid of product buildup by using naturally exfoliating apple cider vinegar extract. Use the targeted applicator to apply onto your scalp when hair is wet, massage, and rinse after 1-3 minutes."

"Swipe on this shimmer shade of pinky-mauve to perk up your lips. The creamy, moisturizing formula glides on smoothly sans stickiness.&qu…

The Last IPSY Bag, Ever.

Pfft, all my selfies are posted sans filter. Nice try, #ipsy.

So this is the last IPSY bag I will ever receive. After I got the notification that this bag had shipped, I promptly cancelled my membership with them and I have no regrets at all. I've been using their subscription for over a year now and I just wasn't feeling their selection process - I got too many products in too many colors (did I seriously need another black felt-tip eyeliner!?) that I just wouldn't use. Not cost effective.

So what's ironic is that I actually like everything that came in this bag. A nice parting gift, I suppose.

BIRCHBOX August 2018 Unboxing + Review

Okay, I'm seriously amazed at how quickly Birchbox ships their stuff out - I got the notification that it shipped a few days before it arrived. That's amazing...(I'm used to waiting on two weeks for ipsy!) And I love the pink box it arrives in - when the office hands it to me I already know exactly what it is. No mystery boxes here!

So let's crack 'er open and see what we've got:

The contents of my July Box include:Oribe Featherbalm Weightless Styleramika Phantom Hydrating Dry Shampoo FoamBorghese Advanced Fango Active Mud MaskDOUCCE Cheek BlushBirchbox Kabuki Brush

Oribe, we gotta talk. You have one of the best hair product scents I've ever come across, but I'm gonna give it to you straight. I don't think any of your products actually work. I've tried your dry shampoo, your beachy wave spray and now this one. All of them just weigh my hair down and make it super greasy. Not a good #lewk.
And for an average price point of $90 full size, …

My Skin Care Routine - Late Summer/Early Autumn

As we slide into August I've started to take stock of my current skin concerns and the routines or products that are either working for me...or aren't. As the weather begins to cool just slightly and that nasty humidity drops off, I start to focus a little more on moisturizing and less on SPF mania (thought that never truly goes away....)

I have combination skin, so I tend to be oily in some areas and fairly dry in others - and these differences seem so much more apparent and exacerbated during the hot summer months. Now that I feel my skin needs are more streamlined, here is my current skincare routine:

Morning I'm not a morning person, so I've whittled my morning skincare routine down into something I can in between brushing my teeth and getting the coffee pot going. I start with a quick sweep of my face using micellar water on a cotton pad, followed with dabbing a few drops of the Primer Water into my skin. I roll the eye serum on while watching coffee drop and then…

BIRCHBOX July 2018 Unboxing + Review

When the concept of beauty subscriptions first crossed into my awareness, I was honestly torn between Birchbox and Ipsy - there were pros and cons for both. At the time, I was looking to beef up my makeup stash so I initially settled on Ipsy and that was a good run while it lasted (I'll be getting my last bag with them in August) but then they had their anti-trans snafu during Pride Month and I couldn't, in good conscience, stick with 'em.

So a couple of coworkers tell me how much they like Birchbox and that I should give it a go if I'm more into hair and skincare products these days. Which I am. So here we are:

The contents of my July Box include: Oribe Apr├Ęs Beach Wave and Shine SprayM·A·C Cosmetics Strobe CreamARROW REVITALIZE Undereye Brightening SerumVasanti® Makeup Magnet WipesEyeko Brow Liner

Oribe is one of those brands that is both beloved by hair stylists and too expensive to justify, especially since I rarely do any styling to my hair. However, I'…

Weekly Food For Thought: On Being Nonbinary, Networking Fears, and Defying French Beauty Standards

Like most women, I struggled with body image. Then I realized I wasn't a woman.  This article over on The Tempest really spoke to me. I too struggle with a disconnect from my own body, but being able to identify my inner-gender helped me to either make peace with the body I have or start making plans to change the things that truly cause me distress. Like having breasts.

How to Get Over Your Fear of Networking - this recent post from The Everygirl reminds us that we all find networking kind of scary, but it can be especially overwhelming for us introverts. The tips provided here are great for breaking it down in much more easily digestible (and less frightening) tactics.

Remember Skrillex? This greasy-haired hipster kid brought dubstep and other forms of EDM to mainstream attention and now he's back with a new soundtrack aimed at making your next workout even more intense. I still like Deadmau5 but I'm not sure if I want to give Skrillex 2.0 a go or not.

K-Beauty Review: The Creme Shop Yogurt Modeling Mask

Hello there viewers! It's been a hot minute since I've done something silly and trivial like a beauty product review but here we are. I actually used this one up before we moved, because the packaging on this thing was just too clunky to want to pack away with the rest of my skin care stuff.

Behold, the yogurt cup face mask.

After tearing off the lid and inside cover, you find a dubious white powder and a mixing stick. The instructions are to fill water to inside line and mix quickly into a creamy consistency. Sounds simple enough.

I clearly added too much water. Oops. So with a texture decidedly more watery than creamy I slathered as much of it as was comfortable onto my skin. It dried to a nice flaky mess on my face while I lounged (for the last time!) in my claw foot tub.

Also, I was supposed to peel it off, not rinse it. Again, this was my mistake. I'm pretty sure I still got the collagen boost this thing was advertising but maybe the aftermath on my face would…
