Diversity is a GOOD thing, kids.

Nina Davuluri, Miss New York, was crowned winner of the 2014 Miss America Pageant. She is the first woman of Indian descent to be crowned. When her name was announced, Twitter and Facebook blew up with hateful and racist comments.

For some examples, please click this link to the buzzfeed article calling out these sick fucks: Yo!

Nina, 24, currently aspires to be a doctor - she comes from a long line of family physicians. Her platform for the pageant was celebrating diversity and while she considers herself first and foremost an American - she paid homage to her Indian roots with a Bollywood fusion dance during the talent portion of the competition.

She says she is very happy that children watching at home can relate to a new Miss America.

Of course, her winning the crown did not come without some controversy: across social media sites she was accused of being a Muslim, a terrorist, an Arab, and not "American enough" to win the pageant. The nation's voted favorite was Miss Kansas, a blonde tattooed army girl who enjoys hunting. According to many racist and ignorant shitheads - Miss Kansas exemplified a "true" American. Pfft.

Nina is also accused of allegedly calling the former Miss America a fat ass and while that may shed some light on her character (aka she's a human being not a flawless angel) that has no bearing whatsoever on her race or heritage.

I'm not a huge fan of beauty pageants - I personally find them silly. But I can't sit by idly and just let this racist crap go on. I needed to say something. Nina is as American as the blonde haired/blue eyed Miss Kansas - she was born in Syracuse, NY. America is the melting pot of the world - a nation founded on immigration and diversity. It just sickens me that in the 21st century we're still bitching and moaning about what makes a "true" American.

Diversity makes the world a more interesting place. There's so much to learn from people different from us and it makes us more enlightened individuals. I am happy to see an Indian American win this pageant, if only to represent the cultural diversity found in this nation.

Do you agree or disagree? What do you think about the people making these hateful comments?

Comments

  1. I think they're plain stupid, racists and bigots.
First of all, there's no such thing as a "true american" nowadays, and by the way they should be remembered that "America" includes latin countries, so what they really mean is "northern America". Like you said, the U.S. are a melting pot of ethnicities and cultures, and anyways some might argue that the blonde, white and blue eyed "true american" could be seen as an usurper by those who were in America before them, and who are not certainly fair skinned and blonde and blue eyed.
Second, I read some very hateful comments about 9/11, as if all arab looking people were directly responsible for an attack that came from terrorists.
Third, I think it's amazing to see some diversity and body positivity, we're all kind of tired of seeing the same super thin body shape over and over again.
What's really problematic about Miss America is that competition based on women's beauty are still a thing in 2013, but sexism apparently isn't a problem to certain people. Only diversity is.

  2. I was chocked by all these stupid and ignorant comments. I mean your country had mixed coloured habitants since the beginning. How can this racism still exist in your country??
It's even more stupid when they call her arab.
