Five Obscure Scary Movies You Should Watch This Halloween

If you're anything like me (though I have my doubts here...) you enjoy a scary movie this time of year. The air is crisp and cool, the trees are eerily bare, and the darkness creeps on us faster and faster each evening. The veil is thinning and spirits run amok, it's the perfect time for a spooky film or two.

With reboot IT being all the rage right now - a hard pass from me, Tim Curry is the only Pennywise in my heart - I figured now would be the perfect time to remind you all that there are some positively wonderful and scary films floating around out there that have been around for a hot minute now and here are five that you should definitely see:

1.) Housebound

A horror-comedy from New Zealand - "A young woman is forced to return to her childhood home after being placed under house arrest, where she suspects that something evil may be lurking." This film is hilarious in that you get a taste of a very dysfunctional family forced under the same roof together while trying to determine if the weird goings-on in their home is paranormal or something....else.

Quite a few spooky moments and jump-scares, an intriguing back story, and protagonist we can all get behind.

2.) Puppet Master

This is a grand ol' series from the indie horror label Full Moon, which was very active in the mid-90's and is likely quite defunct now, but they have a few campy gems including Subspecies, Evil Toys, and this one, Puppet Master.

3.) Little Monsters

While this is technically a kid's movie and meant to delight/frighten a much younger audience, Little Monsters certainly has a few spooky elements to it and really plays up the trope of the "monster under the bed" in a way that Monsters, Inc. could only hope to compare to.

We've also got Howie Mandel in blue face paint so....

4.) Ju-On

I will likely always have a soft spot in my heart for Asian horror films, and Ju-On is a classic by now. You might know the American remake a little better - The Grudge, featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar? The premise is very much a same, a horrific murder-suicide leaves a home tainted by a heavy rage - a grudge and any who encounter it are consumed by it.

It's worth noting that Kayako, the terrifying female spirit seen throughout the film is played by the same actress in both the Japanese and American versions.

5.) Trick or Treat

Probably, more of you have seen this than I anticipate, but I can't leave the most quintessential Halloween horror film off this list. Unspeakable terror befalls all those who don't honor that which is sacred about Halloween night.

Which less-than-popular Halloween or scary films would you add to this list?
