K-Drama Review: Black (2017)

Black is everything I love in a Korean drama. It has a solid blend of serious and funny characters, a rousing and constantly twisting story-line, a multitude of unsolved crimes that all link back to each other and beautiful cinematography - even if I think they might have been a bit heavy-handed on the use of fake blood sometimes.

The story centers itself around 444 - a grim reaper from the underworld feared for his cold and ruthless approach to death and human souls, who finds himself occupying the body of a recently deceased detective in order to track down his wayward grim reaper partner - a young man who had recently committed suicide and refused to cut ties with his past life.

Kang Ha Ram is a girl who has always been able to see the shadow of death on people and because of this, she wears dark sunglasses all the time to avoid seeing them clearly. She doesn't realize, of course, that what she's seeing are grim reapers following around a human who's about to die.

Through a twist of fate, she meets the detective Moo Gang - who is the younger brother of her childhood love - and mistakes him for the older brother. Moo Gang is killed and the reaper 444 takes over his body, attempting to fit seamlessly into the former's life. But their personalities couldn't be more different and even the excuse of "amnesia" isn't even to ward off the suspicions of some.

444, now operating under the name of Black, uses Ha Ram's ability to see grim reaper shadows to track down his missing partner and in the process winds up helping out his team of detectives in solving a complex string of crimes that eventually lead back to his own mysterious past. And naturally, he ends up falling in love with Ha Ram too.

I quite enjoyed the intrigue in this drama and how everyone's past crimes where all interconnected. The character interactions were hilarious as well and there is a fantastic cast of funny side characters to carry the story along when ever it starts to feel just a bit too heavy. I didn't like that a few characters I had grown fond of eventually died for seemingly no good reasons, but such is the way of things.

★★★★☆ / Would absolutely recommend!
